Buenos Aires runs out at the river and the flat country starts. An hour north the Parana breaks into a delta of stilt houses and launches; two hours west the estancias light the fire at noon; an hour east by ferry is a different country.

The Tango House
A dozen theatres between Corrientes and San Telmo run the same shape of night: a set dinner from eight, then a company of eight to twelve dancers and a live orchestra built round the bandoneon. The older rooms, El Viejo Almacen and El Querandi among them, are converted nineteenth-century houses and seat under two hundred. The newer ones are proper theatres with tiered seating and a fuller band.

La Bombonera
Boca Juniors play in a stand of three sheer sides and one flat wall, jammed into a residential block so tightly the ground had to go up instead of out. On a matchday the terraces visibly move. A Day at the Estancia
Two hours west of the city the grid stops and the cattle country begins. The working estancias that open to visitors run one long day: empanadas and wine on arrival, horses through the morning, an asado at noon that goes on for two hours, then folk guitar and a display of riding before the bus back.
